What is Magento?

Magento is an ecommerce platform built-in PHP, which helps developers create an ecommerce website. It was released on March 31, 2008, by Varien and developed on the Zend Framework.

There are thousands of businesses who use Magento open-source to start their online businesses, including well known brands like Nike and Samsung..

In 2018, Adobe acquired Magento for $1.68 billion to complete their commerce offering. This acquisition will also help Magento to develop in the enterprise market.

Best eCommerce Platforms

Why use Magento?

Magento has different types of license, open source which is free and then a paid commercial licensed and cloud version. It is therefore accessible for every type of business who wish to sell products online. It’s one of the best open source ecommerce platforms available on the market today.

There are some basic features of Magento:

    • Product management: with many images, optional comment reviews products, a favorites list, inventory.
    • Category management: easy to find and select products by category
    • Inventory management: management of products left in stock, import, export
    • Client account: account status, transaction history, preferred catalog, address, shopping cart
    • Customer service: enhance the features, customer contact form; the comprehensive follow-up, email service.
  • Order Management
  • Payments: Many payment methods such as credit card, PayPal, Authorize.net, Google Checkout, support for external payment modules like CyberSource, ePay, eWAY, and more.
  • Search technology: fast, friendly, support search on Google SiteMap
  • International support: multi-lingual and monetary
  • Promotional and marketing tools: coupons, promotions, and more.
  • Analyse and report: integrate with the Google Analytics service and provide multiple reports.

Omnichannel is the future of retail, a multichannel approach to sales that seeks to provide customers with a seamless shopping experience, whether they’re shopping online from a desktop or mobile device, by telephone, or in a brick-and-mortar store. A lot of merchants select Magento for their website, and then use Magento POS (Point of sale) for their brick-and-mortar stores. Thanks to that, they can sell and manage their business from a centralised system.

Magento also has integration with inventory management systems such as linnworks so your warehouse software can connect directly with magento for a seamless connected system, which then benefits customers by sending updates on their orders.

What makes Magento different from other platforms?

Open source – Highly customisable

Magento is a flexible, scalable eCommerce solution that gives you lots of flexibility to customise. It provides the possibility to extend your platform to create unique and differentiated branded experiences for your customers. It has the ability to adapt well to change and has the potential to be modified to meet the requirements of shop owners. For example, one of our customers is an online chemist with a customised medication purchasing module.

Freedom to choose the hosting services

Magento eCommerce retailers are able to freely select the hosted platform of their choice. This provides greater freedom for all online shopping businesses to have their own files and be selective with different hosting companies, allowing them to make the decision with who they host and migrate if they would like to.

Responsive mobile

It is good for keeping the standards of responsive mobile web design. Both the free community edition and the enterprise version of Magento incorporate the HTML5 platform to maximise the mobile shopping experience for your customers across mobile, tablet and desktop.

54% of total eCommerce sales will come from mobile commerce sales by 2021. Magento Mobile establishes a complete brand experience for customers so they can use their mobile devices to connect anytime and anywhere.

Easy multi-platform integration

You can easily integrate third-party add-ons and modules to your Magento store to create a more complete and seamless experience for shop administrators and for your customers.

The platform enables developers to add lots of third-party integrations such as Google Analytics, eBay, Paypal, Mail Chimp, and many more.

Better speed

They are making an effort to be one of the fastest eCommerce stores in the world. We’ve recently discussed speed in our other blog post, The Importance Of The Speed Of Your Digital Channel, in this we specify 3 speed opportunities that can increase conversion crates, average order values and page views.

It provides the opportunity for developers to create themes and one of the fastest themes we’ve found is Hyva, which is a truly rapid site and scores perfect scores on Google’s Lighthouse analysis tool. More info on lighthouse can be found at one on one of our other recent blog posts – Lighthouse scores – What are they and why are they important?

Another option is to build a PWA (Progressive Web App) storefront that can speed up your website even further and delight your customers with a lightning fast experience. We have in depth knowledge of Vue Storefront which is an open source PWA frontend, designed with the headless approach. It is the easiest way to make your Magento-based Commerce meet mobile-first standards.

SEO friendly

Magento is an SEO-friendly content management system known as Magento SEO. It contains lots of credible SEO features such as:

  • Search friendly URLs
